Matchwell Product Research
Overview
The Matchwell team came to Viget with the goal of taking their healthcare staffing platform to the next level. Matchwell’s platform allows hospitals to post open positions, and surfaces relevant positions to clinicians — effectively removing the need for staffing agencies. They needed help assessing their product-market fit, understanding how people were using their platform, and they wanted to modernize their visual design.
Our work with Matchwell took place in two parts; an initial discovery and design effort catered towards hospital end-users, and a second discovery and design effort catered towards their clinician-facing experience. In both rounds of our engagement with Matchwell, I analyzed existing product data and designed and led qualitative research to understand user sentiments and behavior. I collaborated closely with Viget UX designer Matthew Mocniak to help shape the designs he created, and provided KPI and analytics tracking recommendations for the new designs we proposed.
My analysis and research activities included:
Audit of existing Google Analytics data
Stakeholder interviews
Healthcare facility user interviews
Development of clickable prototypes utilizing design files
Usability testing with prototypes
Clinician user interviews
Goals and KPIs workshop
Key insights from my healthcare facility research included:
There was a need for role-based platform login options for healthcare facilities. Recruiters and shift managers used the platform in divergent ways and had different platform preferences
While Matchwell’s healthcare facility platform was originally intended for filling open positions, healthcare facilities also strongly valued it as a shift scheduling platform
Key insights from my clinician research included:
Clinicians were unclear about the primary purpose of Matchwell and how it worked. They were not sure if it was meant to help find full-time positions or whether it was ultimately aimed towards flexibility. They also perceived it as a platform geared towards nurses specifically'
Clinicians need clear guidance throughout the job application process. When working through staffing agencies, they were accustomed to a high degree of “hand-holding”, and Matchwell’s digital alternative needed to account for that
Clinicians were overwhelmed by the amount of job listings presented to them. They needed clear ways to filter their results and compare position listings
Clinicians wanted more transparency into the status of their job applications
Result
We delivered new, validated designs and measurement guidance to Matchwell and continued ongoing consultation support for their in-house engineers
Key Takeaways
A key part of taking a startup to the next level is assessing the product-market fit. It’s important to uncover what needs users actually have and understand how they engage with your existing platform
It pays off to gain deep knowledge about the community you are designing for. My team spent a lot of time up front learning about the healthcare industry and reading blogs from the healthcare community. Immersing ourselves made us more empathetic during research and design for Matchwell
